A leading figure in student finance and support has been recognised with a special award as NASMA celebrated its 30th anniversary and marked three decades of impact in the sector.
Phil Davis was presented with a 30th Anniversary Outstanding Contribution Award, a one-off accolade created to recognise exceptional dedication to student money advice and the wider further and higher education community.
The award sits outside the traditional Student Money Advice Awards categories and was introduced to mark NASMA’s milestone anniversary, highlighting an individual whose influence has extended far beyond their day-to-day role.
Phil was praised for a career defined by advocacy, expertise, and a commitment to ensuring students are equipped with the financial knowledge and support needed to succeed in higher education.
Throughout his career, he has been a prominent voice championing the value of professional student money advice. Colleagues and peers have long recognised his efforts to raise the profile of the profession and emphasise its crucial role in improving student outcomes.
In 2016, Phil further cemented his reputation as a sector leader by authoring a comprehensive guide to student finance, helping prospective students and their families navigate the often complex landscape of tuition fees, maintenance loans, and university funding.
Beyond his published work, Phil has also made a significant contribution to NASMA itself. During his time on the NASMA Board, he played a key role in shaping support for student money advisers across the UK, helping to strengthen both practice and professional development within the community.
Even after stepping down from the Board, Phil continued to give his time and expertise generously. He remained actively involved through NASMA’s Hardship Funds Committee and became known as a trusted source of guidance, frequently responding to complex queries raised by practitioners nationwide.
In announcing the award, outgoing NASMA Chair, Kellie McAlonan, highlighted Phil’s “above and beyond” contribution to both NASMA and the student support sector as a whole, describing him as more than deserving of special recognition during the organisation’s milestone year.
Although Phil was unable to attend the ceremony in person, attendees were still able to hear from him through a pre-recorded acceptance message, which added a celebratory touch to the evening, and can be viewed below..
