Paula Barker and Denise Brereton have now left their Student Funding roles at Cardiff University after a combined contribution of almost 60 years to the sector!
We’re particularly proud as a Wales region to have had them both as such amazing assets.

Paula Barker
After 29 years in student support and over 13 years at Cardiff University, Paula Barker is retiring from her role as Student Support Adviser. Paula leaves as the current NASMA Money Adviser of the Year—an honour that reflects her outstanding contributions to the sector.
Renowned as a students and benefits guru in Wales, Paula has shown unwavering dedication, empathy, and passion throughout her career.
She has been a fierce advocate for students, challenging funding injustices and helping many overcome barriers to education—particularly through her expertise in NHS and part-time funding.
A trusted colleague and generous team player, Paula brought enthusiasm and knowledge to every query and challenge. Her impact has been felt widely, both within Cardiff University and across the student finance sector. As she steps into retirement, Paula leaves behind an inspiring legacy and a lasting positive influence on the lives of countless students and colleagues.
Denise Bretreton
After an impressive 30 + year career, Denise recently left her role as a Student Support Adviser at Cardiff University, where she devoted over 7 years to the Business School. Throughout her career, she has worked at 4 out of the 9 higher education institutions in Wales, showcasing her extensive experience and dedication to the sector. Denise served as the NASMA Wales Regional Chair for several years, contributing significantly to the organisation and its mission. Her colleagues will fondly remember her wicked Scouse humour, which has brought light and laughter to many a situation.
Denise will be particularly remembered by staff and students at Cardiff University because of Winnie Wednesday.
Winnie, a gorgeous cockapoo therapy dog, would join Denise in the Business School every Wednesday, providing comfort and joy to many and assisting with numerous student money-related events.
D has dedicated her career to supporting students and advocating for their needs. Her creativity and innovative thinking have been instrumental in drawing students into the service and raising awareness of the support available. She has always been a trustworthy team member, eager to assist with any question, and brought her skill and enthusiasm to every situation. She leaves behind a legacy of dedication, humour, and unwavering support for students.
