Starting Uni in 2012
It seems like such a long way off, but that doesn't mean it's too soon to start thinking about your funding. Starting to plan now could really help you this time next year.
One of the important things to have in place when starting your studies is your finances. Take a look at this quick list and check that everything is on your list:
- How will you pay your tuition fees?
If you are an undergraduate student from the United Kingdom (UK) or European Union (EU) then you can probably apply for a loan to cover your tuition fees. For undergraduate students in 2012 your tuition fees should be no more than £9,000. If you do not plan to take a loan then check with your university/college about how you need to pay your fees. You will probably need to pay something before you can enrol, but might also be able to spread payments across the year once you've enrolled. - I haven't applied for any funding yet. When can I apply?
If you are from England you can apply for your funding now online. Students from Wales and Northern Ireland can apply from 21st March 2012, and students from Scotland can apply in April.
You should also be able to apply for support up to nine months after the 1st Sept 2012 for 2012-13, though obviously the later you leave it the later your money will arrive! It will take a few weeks for your application for support to be assessed, so don't leave it to the last minute! - What about my living costs?
When you apply for a tuition fee loan you can also apply for a maintenance loan and possibly a grant at the same time. This support should help towards your living costs, but there's a good chance it won't cover all your expenses. Think about what you can do to increase your income. Your university probably advertises part-time jobs, so it's worth checking out the options. - What do I need to take to university on the first day?
Your university/college will probably provide you with a list of things you will need. For your finances remember that you will not receive loan and grant payments in to your bank account until your university has told the Student Loans Company that you have arrived. This means that you should take enough money to support your living costs for the first few days. - I need to work out a new budget, what do I need to consider?
You should try to take in to account all your expenditure, and also all your income. This should include income from loans and grants. Remember that your maintenance loan won't cover the full 52 weeks of the year, so think about how you will support yourself during the holidays.
