2011-12 Training

For 2011-12 we have arranged a comprehensive training programme, responding to the requests of NASMA members and those working in financial capability roles in further and higher education across the UK.

Lunch will not be provided at these events unless otherwise stated.

NASMA APDE

The NASMA Annual Professional Development Event (APDE) provides a unique training, development and networking opportunity for all those working to support students. In 2012 the APDE will also provide an opportunity for those working on financial capability projects to showcase their work to others. More information about APDE can be found here.

CLOSED EVENTS

Using Social Media

This one-day training will combine theory with practical hands-on experience of using different social media tools as a way of reaching and engaging your students. Drawing on recent research, and looking at a wide-range of options, the skills learnt should assist you in enhancing the communication channels open to your service. The training will be of relevance for anyone working in student funding or advice and wanting to explore use of social media for their service.

A working lunch will be provided for this event.

Promoting Your Service & Engaging Students

Getting students’ attention and engagement on money issues is always a challenge. This one-day marketing for non-marketers programme will cover some of the basics, in particular looking at how to effectively communicate to the right people, at the right time, and with the right message.

Psychology of Money

Money often is a very emotional issue and our use of it can sometimes seem irrational. Understanding young people’s ways of thinking and how underlying beliefs effect the way they approach money offers student money advisers and fund administrators new insights and opportunities to help support students to change the way they deal with their finances.

Event & Workshop Management for Financial Capability

This training will help you to plan, deliver and evaluate effective financial capability sessions for students. The one-day event is intentionally timed to take place in advance of National Student Money Week, and will assist those that have delivered sessions before as well as those with no previous experience. The training will develop your understanding of trainer skills, and the practical elements of the day will provide you with a chance to try them out in a safe environment.

2012 Update Briefings

Continuing the NASMA series of 2012 briefings, these half-day events will focus on developments since summer 2012, including the topical issues surrounding 2012 funding arrangements. The content for these briefings will move beyond the headline fees & loans information, to consider in more detail the current and expected future aspects of student funding.

Cross Nation Funding

This one-day event will include information about funding for students from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland & Wales. There will also be consideration for UK residents looking to study elsewhere in Europe. Presentations about funding will be combined with facilitated regional discussions and a panel debate. One not to miss!

Visit to SLC Darlington

Repeating the very successful NASMA visit to the SLC Contact and Application Services Centre arranged in 2009, this event will provide an opportunity for up to 30 NASMA members to receive an up to date overview of application handling processes, a tour of the building, and the opportunity to learn more about Student Finance England operational areas. We expect places at this event to fill quickly!

Student Funding Tricky Bits

This series of workshops delivered within one day will offer training on those elements of student funding and advice that often cause problems, even for the more experienced adviser!

This training is designed for those with some experience of the subjects presented. If you are new to student funding it is strongly recommended that you attend the Introduction to Student Funding training and gain more experience prior to attending this event.

NOTE: You will not be asked to specify your preferred morning and afternoon workshops when you complete your online booking. We will contact registered delegates about this in advance of the event.

Working With Groups

This session will look at group work skills for money advisers, bringing what we know about the psychology of individuals into group working.

The day will start with consideration of the areas that would make the biggest difference to your practice and will move on to address the biggest topics. The range of content on the day will include addressing and coping with disengagement within a group, challenging without embarrassing individuals, overcoming fears and nightmare scenarios, presenting with confidence and structuring group sessions.

For those of you looking at ways to be more proactive in your approach to getting financial support messages to students this training event holds many of the answers!

Introduction to Student Funding

This one-day training will focus on student funding, looking at systems for current and forthcoming academic years including eligibility for statutory support, the application process through to repayment, discretionary support, National Scholarship Programme, and with reference to full-time, part-time, undergraduate and postgraduate students. The training will include a Cross Nation element. There will be plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion.

This training is designed for those new to work in student funding, those looking to move in to the field, and anyone that has been away from student funding for more than two years. For those also new to advice work, this training is designed to sit alongside the Introduction to Student Advice & Financial Capability training. (see below). Students & Debt

This event is for practitioners who have some money advice experience but would like to improve their practice. The session will include:

  • an overview of money advice strategies.
  • square peg debts (debts that don't fall neatly into the priority/non-priority categories).
  • identifying some of the more tricky debts to deal with (e.g. payday loans).
  • recognising when self-help advice is appropriate and an introduction to the range of self-help techniques.
  • helping clients with mental health problems.
